The invisible years: motherhood and menopause – Live Discussion

In the quest to advance their careers, women are often encouraged to increase their visibility in the workplace. However, emerging research suggests that certain life stages and events can present formidable challenges to women’s professional visibility, notably during early motherhood and the peri/menopause phase. For instance, one report highlights that a significant number of women aged 50 and above feel overlooked and invisible to employers due to their age, with many reporting instances of overt discrimination. In another study, a quarter of mothers who returned to work after childbirth expressed feeling undervalued compared to their pre-motherhood roles.

As we approach World Menopause Day, we invite you to join us for a thought-provoking discussion on the topic of workplace invisibility. We will explore how we can and must cultivate inclusive workplace cultures that empower all women to thrive, regardless of the life stages they navigate.

I have worked for Bupa for 17 years in many varied roles. I am currently the Colleague Engagement Executive for Bupa UKI – covering Operations and Healthcare Management. One of my biggest passions is raising my voice about the LGBT+ community and Womens Health, centring on the Menopause. I am the Employee Community Champion for Womens Wellbeing. In 2021 I started a conversation around Menopause for Bupa employees on behalf of our Employee Network Be You. We have held conversations each month since then. Building a safe environment for all genders to speak openly and confidentially about their journeys in and around the subject which for so long as been taboo. Our MenoPals chat room is open 24/7, with employees from Australia, Egypt and Dubai joining in these monthly sessions and the chat room helps every one of our MenoPals through the good days, and the horrible days. With over 300 voices, we really are not alone. With the help of our commercial teams, we now offer a Menopause Hub, Menopause nurses and the Menopause Plan to not only our external customers but to our Employees as well. We have also recently launched the Period Hub for employees and customers. We also offer period products in our offices, and soon these will also be placed in our Dental Practices. The more we peel back our ‘onion’ layers, the more we can help each other.
