Sue Jones on Taking control of your own leadership development

Taking control of your own leadership development

It’s a common situation in the workplace. You’ve been working as an individual, successfully carrying out your role and – on the strength of that – you get promoted.

But with that new position comes the expectation that you now know how to manage your team and have the skills to get the best out of them.

So it’s little wonder that Sue Jones, Director of Marketing at Airwave, says: “If I was starting out again there is one thing that I would do differently – and that would be to arm myself with line manager knowledge”.

As she explains, when moving into a line manager role for the first time you tend to have to find your way on your own, learning on the job as you go. Whilst this may be far from an ideal scenario, it’s a situation that a lot of people find themselves in and one that many of us can therefore relate to.

“I take great pleasure in nurturing and developing a team to get the best out of them and I really would have liked in those early days as a line manager not to be muddling along and learning on the job and having some good ideas about how to be doing that.”
