Lyn Cecil on getting started in business & standing out from the crowd

In a fun and frank interview with recruitment expert Lyn Cecil, we find out how being different sets you apart from the crowd.

Lyn Cecil, CEO of The Plus Team and everywomanClub member, has appeared on Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman and as a Secret Millionaire on Channel 4. She has won a NatWest everywoman Award and is currently Joint Chair of the Lords/Lady Taverners City Region.

On starting her own company

“The most exciting moment in my working life was starting my own company. I was 27 and had been planning it for a couple of years. Sometimes you mustn’t over-think it, over-research it – just do it!”

On growing your company

“One of the greatest sayings I’ve come across, is if you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got. Trying to grow your company, something has to change, or it’s just going to be the same.”

On creating your own PR

“We’ve never actually paid a PR company. After I won the NatWest everywoman award, I was invited to Hilary Devey’s dinner and interviewed by Jeremy Paxman. If you do things fun and differently, you get picked up. Create your own PR.”

On being positive

“My whole energy in life was shaped aged 12 when I became interested in boys. I decided they liked the popular girls who I thought were the happy ones. So, I’d lie in bed in the morning saying to myself ‘I’m going to be happy today, I’m going to be happy today’, and after a while it’s automatic and gives you a really positive energy. Did it work with the boys? Well I am single, but I’ve lived a lot!”

“Don’t do grey emails and grey things in a grey world. Be bold, dare to be different! It’s the same in your business. Whatever your idea, be different, otherwise the best you’ll be is average.”
