everywomanClub member Angela Hamlin is the former deputy matron of a major London hospital and founder of Draycott Nursing & Care.
Angela launched Draycott in 1996 after caring for her own mother while she had dementia. Starting with just two patients and no staff, working from a borrowed flat and an internet café computer, Angela has grown her care business into a company with 17 office staff and almost 100 care staff looking after scores of clients in London, the UK and abroad.
Despite the challenges of being shy, and having no cash flow, Angela overcame all the odds by staying focused, making a plan and getting started in networking to fulfil her dreams in the care business.
Angela insists staff are the “most important asset” in any business, and good leaders should always make their people feel valued. For her, team stands for – Together Everyone Achieves More.
On delivering presentations
“Do a lot of background work; research your subject thoroughly and really think about what you want to deliver. Is it more of a sales pitch? Or are you teaching others? The first paragraph is vital to get people’s attention straight away. And the last paragraph of your presentation is just as important in making an impact. Don’t forget to look people in the eye and smile too! This helps make you stay engaging.”
