Wendy Papworth on the power of pushing back

When it comes to things Wendy Papworth, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Barclays Plc, might do differently if she were starting out again, one of the key learnings is the realisation that she doesn’t always have to say yes. As she’s discovered, “it’s ok to push back – you can politely say no.”

The other thing she’d change is to take full advantage of the gift of people’s time. Whilst working in insurance, her first branch manager gave her a set of management books, yet her instinct was to see it as homework rather than an opportunity to maximise her skills. “Taking the gift, using it and playing it back to someone is really valuable.”
