Reaching the top of any profession requires a mix of talent and self-confidence, as Helen Kelisky can testify. Without those attributes, it’s unlikely she would hold the position of Vice President of Telecommunications & Media Industry at IT technology company IBM UK.

Helen’s rise up the corporate ladder is based on a strong will to succeed and an unshakable belief in her business principles. Here, she tells everywoman how a confident, positive outlook has boosted her career.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CONFIDENT?

I have certainly never been backward at coming forward. I have been described as having courage and tenacity, I have a strong sense of what is right and I am clear about my values.

WAS THERE A TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER WHEN YOU REALISED YOU HAD SUDDENLY BECOME MORE CONFIDENT?

I wouldn’t say there’s been one particular moment; rather, a series of events and situations have helped shape and build my confidence. One time in my career, I went against a manager’s advice while dealing with a client because my gut instinct told me it was the right thing to do. I won the deal, so I didn’t have to explain why I did it – but I was confident enough with my reasons if anyone wanted an explanation.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE CONFIDENCE?

For me, being confident means that I can try to change things for the better based on my beliefs and values. It’s about putting as much into your personal and working life as you can.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO LACKS CONFIDENCE?

Try doing something that tests you, like giving a presentation or writing a difficult email. Do something that makes you feel uncomfortable so you can say you’ve done it. Whether presenting to large audiences or having difficult conservations, either internally or with a business partner, it’s about doing the right thing. I’d also suggest spending more time with those who energise you, rather than with detractors, and surround yourself with the sort of people who can help build your confidence.
