Nicky_Dulieu

Working in fashion retail, Nicky Dulieu certainly knows the importance image can have on the impact you make in business. We caught up with her to discover her experiences and the advice she has for fellow women in business.

Nicky joined fashion retailer Hobbs as Finance Director in March 2006 and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in August 2007. Less than a year later she took the helm as Managing Director before being promoted to Chief Executive in March 2009. Since joining the organisation, she has been instrumental in restructuring the board and bringing new talent into the business, refinancing the business as well as launching two new labels, NW3 and Hobbs Invitation. She has 30 years experience in retail, and previously worked at Marks and Spencer.

“Image has a huge impact, as first impressions really count. When someone takes care of their appearance it suggests that they not only care about their work but also the quality of their work.

Most men who wear a well cut suit will always look smart. I think it is harder for women to know definitively what will make the right impact. It’s something I put time into considering, because it is important for me that I represent my business in the most appropriate way.

When I have an event to go to, or I am visiting a store one of the first things I will consider is what I will wear and what is appropriate for the occasion. Whether I want to inspire a team, give confidence to investors, or have a challenging conversation, each will require a slightly different look.”

IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT AREAS OF IMAGE/APPEARANCE DO WOMEN MOSTLY STRUGGLE WITH?

“Getting it just right for the occasion, not coming across as too sexy or too stern. It can often be a struggle judging things correctly – making sure that what you wear doesn’t look like you’ve tried too hard or not hard enough.”

WHAT ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING IS A MUST IN YOUR WARDROBE?

“It has to be my little black dress; it can take me through from boardroom meetings to evening events with some clever changes to accessories and shoes.”

WHAT ONE TOP TIP CAN YOU GIVE WOMEN WHICH WILL IMPACT ON THEIR APPEARANCE?

“As well as the practical consideration of the occasion you are dressing for, get yourself a pair of killer heels! They will make you stand better and give you the confidence to create a better impact.”

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN CONSIDERATION WHEN DRESSING FOR AN EVENT?

“It’s mainly about representing the brand you work for. Even if you don’t work in fashion your business has brand values and therefore as a reflection of that business, your appearance should reflect those values. I want people to think I look stylish and have paid attention to the detail of my look, which are key attributes of my brand. I also want to inspire women to dress with confidence as I know just how much difference it can make.”
