Creating and leading a successful team is challenging, whether you are experienced or a novice.  Teams are made up of individuals, each with their own views and personalities, and to be effective you need to be focused on bringing your team together to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

From our frequent conversations with everywoman members, we know that managing a cohesive team is a particular challenge.  To help you, the everywoman workbook, Leading a Powerful Team, details the five fundamentals of building a team – download a copy of the workbook now (member login is required).

  1. Trust – as a team leader, it is important that you demonstrate vulnerability to your team to encourage them to do the same and do not punish vulnerability in others.  When you have trust, team members are comfortable being vulnerable about their behaviours, fears, weaknesses and mistakes.  They are also open and honest with each other.
  1. Embracing conflict – you need to acknowledge that conflict is productive.  A team which embraces conflict engages in passionate discussions on issues and decisions key to their success.  Team members question, challenge and/or disagree in the spirit of finding the best answers.
  1. Commitment – commitment by team members means that all opinions and ideas are put on the table and considered.  Team members can achieve genuine buy-in on important decisions, even when some initially disagree.
  1. Accountability – team members commit to the standards of performance and goals in place, and hold one another accountable.  This means that the team leader/manager is not the only person keeping team members on track.
  1. Attention to results – a results-driven team has members who set aside their individual egos, needs and agendas to focus on what is best for the team.  The number one priority is their collective results which define the team’s success.
