Heather Townsend's Journey to Authorship: Part 6

Heather Townsend's Journey to Authorship: Part 6

So, what’s happening in my fairy tale?

The heroine in my story (that’s me by the way) in true Hollywood fashion, is struggling to find her prince... Getting in her way are two delightful toddlers, a young business to run, clients to work for, a website to rebuild, phone calls from my mother – “just calling up for a chat”, household chores... The obstacles, hurdles and barriers that are holding me back on my journey are real and definitely far from imaginary. Nobody, least of all me, said it would be easy to become a profitable published author.

So, how am I motivating myself and progressing this project? Firstly, I’ve set myself some ambitious goals – which, come hell or high water, I will meet. I’ve always suffered with a bit of sheer bloody mindedness. Secondly, by writing these articles for everywoman, I’ve got too many people that I don’t want to let down by giving up. Thirdly, I have discovered a passion for writing. As I write this article it is 22:30 at night, my husband is watching TV, and I am typing away on my laptop. I think that’s called dedication for you! I’m still struggling to call myself an author... but that will come over time.

So what goals have I set myself? I will finish the research for one of my books by the end of September and have the book written by 31st December 2009. Each day I make myself do at least two things to progress towards my goal of becoming a published author. These are two techniques that I may use with my coaching clients – get them to set big goals and then break them down into smaller goals and daily tasks.

Looking back over the previous month I have achieved so much. I’ve worked out how to get my book published and I’ve identified a title and structure to my books. I’ve also realised that I am now addicted to the promise of what may come from my writing. In fact, it was only today that I was day dreaming that a publisher would ring me up and offer me a large advance in return for the rights to my book.

Back to reality... with a large bump... it’s time to head up to bed to re-energise for the day ahead.
