PR & Marketing
Hi there
Anybody got any helpful tips on writing PR's? and getting free editorial in magazines etc..
I run my own online business www.PrettyPinkToes.co.uk which has quite a few quirky products which I would like to get more coverage. I could try advertising in magazines but it is sooooo expensive and to date I've managed with just Google advertising. I've been extremely lucky and have a great database of customers who I regulary do email shots to. I often find myself on peoples blogs which I really appreciate. I'm on Facebook and just started Twittering (took me a while to get my head around it though lol)
Of course any other suggestions would be great and any feedback on the site would be appreciated!
....and don't forget to join me on Facebook and Twitter

Hello Tina
I've just joined and looking through the discussion posts, i've stumbled upon your question and thought i'd offer some tips.
I've been a marketing manager for about 10 years so have a few ideas to throw at you.
PR and Editorial is a great way to raise interest in new products/brands/events etc but for a regular stream of visitors, as you are online, it would be best to focus your efforts online also. Simply because trying to get someone who sees your message offline to visit you online is very tricky and takes several times for them to see the message before they action it.
What i'd start with is something that sums your business up in a few words. What is your key USP? Why should I come to you over any of the other website offering similar products? What is your primary target audience? As a female in my 30's the products on your website are of particular interest to me, but i had to click a few pages to understand what you're offering. If you can encapsulate what your offering is in one sentence and place that on the landing page of your website then you're helping people understand quickly whether what you have is of interest to them.
You mention that you have a good database of contacts; why don't you write to them and incentivise them to refer your website to the ladies in their lives for a treat. Or do a special email blast with some Christmas promotion. When I you read 'incentivise' or 'promtion' it doesn't always have to mean discounting your prices (once you start lowering your prices it's very hard to come back from that) but some sort of added value for your customers, discounted postage (which i see you've already done) or get a 'complimentary' something with ever order over £xx. Also the way groupon incentivise referrals from their purchasers is interesting and feels like you're getting some value back.
Once word starts filtering out through your database/facebook contacts that your website, you'll hopefully find referrals start coming your way, which in turn increases your database.
Hope that makes some sense and helps a little. Let me know if you need any clarity on anything!

Hi Tina,
I've just had a look at your website and I think it looks great.
However, as you'll see from the following link, you've got 1,562 validation (coding) errors on your home page alone. This could cause the site to display poorly in certain web browsers.

Also, I know I mention this in many of my posts, but I'm surprised that you don't have your products on Google Base, especially as it's a completely free service.

I love the different types of products that you are selling...
You want to raise your visibility and credibility...get some media coverage without having to pay for advertising....
First thing I would suggest is to approach your local paper either offering to write a column around fashion tips or maybe saving money by accessorizing outfits they already have or write a letter / email for the letters section around something similar
Secondly be bold, find your local community radio station and contact them saying you would be willing to do an interview....think of a way you can tie in what you are selling with helping the local community...for example could you perhaps offer to provide the local kids dance school with some of your products to wear in their next show?
Thirdly what celebs do you think would enjoy your products...? Contact their agents and offer to give them a complimentary product of yours....if they wear it in public what better publicity for you?
Let me know how you get on!
