5 Top Tips for Choosing a Complementary Therapist
We need to take time out to relax & revitalise ourselves and what better way to do that than indulging in some complementary therapy. Anyone can offer their services as a massage therapist, reflexologist, beauty therapist etc. without any qualifications or insurance. This is because, unlike physiotherapy for example, these professions do not have protected title. With this in mind, we've compiled our top 5 tips for choosing a complementary therapist.
1. Asking friends for a referral is a great way to find a good complementary therapist. Ask: Who do they use? Why do they use them? How many times have they visited them? And so on.
2. Always use a qualified therapist who belongs to a professional body. Find out about qualifications and accreditations. Reputable associations/professional bodies, such as FHT or CNHC (the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council) list members and their qualifications, so you can check that a therapist is registered with them.
3. Find out if the therapist has professional indemnity insurance for the therapy you’d like to receive.
4. Call the therapist and have a chat about what you want. Complementary therapy can be a very personal experience, so you need to feel comfortable and at ease with you therapist.
5. Find out how and where they practise. Is it an environment that you would feel comfortable and safe in? Are there other therapists at the same location?
Remember there are lots of really well qualified and experienced complementary therapists out there, so why not treat yourself some relaxation and pampering.
