Heather Townsend's Journey to Authorship: Part 4
Two little books went to market...
It’s now the 4th article in my series chronicling my journey to being a profitable, successful writer. The hard work has started, and this is before I’ve actually written anything! For the benefit of any readers who haven’t read articles 1, 2 or 3... In my last article, I decided to write two books: (these are working titles)
‘Your personal guide to making partner’ AND
‘Building the qualities and characteristics of a successful entrepreneur’
The next question is what channels to use to market my books. And to put that in plain English, how am I going to make sure that my target audience gets to hear about and want to buy my book? Plus, how can I do this cost-effectively? From my research, my cover price is likely to be $9.99 - $19.99, and it will cost me £80 a book to get the ISBN number for my book. If I sell it on lulu.com I will have to pay them 20% of the cover price - so I can’t afford to throw lots of money at marketing and promoting my book. In my dreams, one of the top business publishing houses buys the rights to my two books, and pays me a large advance and all I have to do is write the books...? Back to reality! Well, maybe not that far-fetched, lulu.com one of the main e-book publishers has started to follow me on twitter.
Anyway, I digress – to help me think about marketing, I did a brainstorm of all the ways I could market my book:
That’s lots of ideas, and I am sure that there are more ways I could market my books. Have you got any ideas how I could successfully market my book? I would love to hear them – drop me a line, heather@theefficiencycoach.co.uk.
In my next article, I am going to evaluate all my ideas and write some goals for the next stages of my journey.

Anyway, I digress – to help me think about marketing, I did a brainstorm of all the ways I could market my book:
- My website
- My blog
- Include within any Author credits for any article I write
- Find and use a publisher (and let them do all the hard work!)
- Include a link on my e-mail signature to a place where the book can be bought
- Word of mouth
- Talk about it to any delegate who goes on one of my programmes
- Promote it at any networking event I am a speaker at
- Use the free e-book websites to publish an extract of the book
- Use lulu.com to self-publish an e-book and let them distribute it to all the major book distributors
- Get published on amazon kindle, sony e-reader and cool-er – the 3 major e-book readers on the market
- Find an agent
- Give free copies to anyone that helps with my research
- Do a deal with businesses or organisations that work with entrepreneurs or professional service firms, e.g. business link, chamber of commerce
- Advertise in trade magazines and websites for my target markets such as accountancy age, businesszone, accountingweb, Everywoman, businesswomen cafe
- Promote it on my twitter and linkedin profile
- ... erm...
That’s lots of ideas, and I am sure that there are more ways I could market my books. Have you got any ideas how I could successfully market my book? I would love to hear them – drop me a line, heather@theefficiencycoach.co.uk.
