3 Sep 2008The Enriched - a new demographic emerges
Whilst all we seem to hear these days in the media is doom and gloom about the economy, it was interesting to hear this week, according to NatWest private banking, there is a new emerging demographic of business people, ‘The Enriched’. This predominantly younger, increasingly female group are those that are eligible to receive private banking services, although many will not be aware of this.

We’re all aware of the importance the internet in changing the way we communicate, access information and of course, do business. Everywhere you look there are signs that we’re become a society that lives online. Did you know, for example, that recent figures released by OFCOM show that the quantity of TV viewed online doubled between 2006 and 2007? And did you know that Internet Service Providers have actually been complaining about the strain put on their networks by the success of the BBC’s iPlayer? Clearly with so many people online, the internet ought to offer rich opportunities for those of us seeking business success.
12 Aug 2008Women bringing business back home
The BBC’s Money Programme last week focused on the rise of the Mumpreneur – women who set up their own businesses from home out of a motivation for their work to fit in more flexibly with their home life, rather than the other way round. According to a recent YouGov survey, the number of women working for themselves has leapt by nearly 20 per cent since 2000, and now tops a million.

31 Jul 2008The online “revolution”

Recently published figures have revealed the extent to which technology is reshaping our daily lives. The Ipsos MORI survey of 2000 people for the BT 21st Century Life Index report showed there is a “revolution in the way we shop, do business and are entertained”. With such powerful tools available to us – the survey showed that 44 per cent have broadband at home – it’s perhaps unsurprising that so many of us are seizing the chance to shape our activities, transactions and even social lives in a way that suits us.

27 Jul 2008Maternity leave: time for a level playing field
Once again the issue of maternity leave has hit the headlines. But this time it’s an acknowledgement from someone in a position of influence – Chief Executive of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission Nicola Brewer – that women are discriminated against in the workplace because of their biological role as the bearers of children...
9 Jul 2008Women in the driving seat

10 Jun 2008Women leading the way

It’s often argued that good leaders are born not made, and indeed it’s unlikely that strong individuals such as Churchill, Sir Richard Branson and Emmeline Pankhurst needed a helping hand in toning their leadership skills. However, for the rest of us, it is sometimes useful to get some objective guidance on how to lead successfully, as it’s often hard to view ourselves how other people see us.

2 Jun 2008Martha Lane Fox: Business success

The National everywoman Conference will again be held in London on National Women in Enterprise Day. This year that will be Wednesday 19 November and we’re busy confirming the final details for what will again be the biggest one-day conference for women starting business owners in the UK. Last year 400 women came along to learn, be inspired and network. It was an exhilarating, jam-packed day.
